This article combines both an academic perspective from Thomas DeLong and a psychiatry perspective from Sara DeLong to present an overview of why ambitious and smart individuals often fail at self-management and leadership due to their fear of showing weakness. This fear drives individuals to manage their work by focusing on what they are comfortable with. However, Delong & Delong present ways in which highly ambitious individuals can better leverage their intelligence and potential in the workplace by looking past negative experiences and discovering ways to be vulnerable within the company.
